Welcome to the Devon History Society

Devon History Society

The Devon History Society was founded in 1969 to further the knowledge and study of the county's history. Its members range from enthusiastic amateurs to senior academic historians. Two conferences are held each year in various parts of Devon, and in addition papers are presented at the annual general meeting held in Exeter. All members receive a free copy of the society's journal, The Devon Historian, and are also kept in touch with events through a regular newsletter.

As part of the Society’s contribution to the encouragement of local history it awards an annual Book of the Year Prize and when thought to be of sufficiently high standard a Dissertation Prize is awarded to the student of Exeter University who is adjudged to have produced the best dissertation on a topic related to Devon’s history. See here for details of the 2008 winners.

Membership is by subscription, the rates per annum being £10 for individual members, £15 for family membership, £10 for affiliated societies, and £15 for corporate membership. Life membership is available for £100. Affiliated local history societies and other relevant organisations are welcome to use this website to publicise their events.
